Purpose
This article explains how 150 Air-Mile-Radius exempt drivers can use the Encompass® ELD system on iPhone/iPad devices to track hours and maintain compliance using exempt logs.
When operating in an exempt driving status, the Driving Hours Available clock will be grayed out and display driving hours as N/A when the vehicle is in motion.
When to Use This Article
- A driver qualifies for the 150 Air-Mile-Radius exemption and needs to use exempt log functionality on an iPhone or iPad.
- An administrator has enabled exempt logs and a driver needs guidance on how to use them on iOS.
- A driver in exempt mode needs to view hours, clocks, recap info, trip info, or add log remarks on an iOS device.
Steps to Follow
Logging In on iOS - Exempt Driver
Launch Encompass® ELD and log in.
Tap Exempt Log. Review the Exempt confirmation message listing the compliance requirements. Press OK to proceed.
Select your current duty status.
The duty status in the green bar will indicate "Exempt". (New customers will see the new Dashboard screens.)
Viewing the Log/Hours - Exempt Driver
All Log views within the View Log area will identify that an *Exempt Log is in use.
Click View Log from the ELD dashboard.
Grid View: The Grid screen displays only on-duty and off-duty time. Both driving and on-duty are combined into on-duty time.
Hours Available View: Tap Hours at the bottom. Drive time and rest break information is not shown.
View Clocks: Tap More at the bottom, then View Clocks. The Driving Hours Available clock is grayed out and displays N/A.
View Recap Info: Tap More at the bottom, then View Recap.
Trip Info
Tap More at the bottom, then View Trip.
To update Trip Information, tap Edit, update information as applicable, then select OK.
Note: Drivers will NOT be prompted to enter Trip Information when using the exempt log function. If their log is converted to a standard grid log during the day, they will be prompted to enter Trip Information at that time.
View, Add and Edit Log Remarks
Tap Log Remarks at the bottom of the screen. Select Add Log Remark from the status that needs a note. These remarks provide additional information about what occurred during a particular duty status.
Select a commonly used remark from the Select Remark arrow, or tap the text box to enter your own remark. Tap Save. The remark can be edited or deleted afterward.
What Not to Do / Common Pitfalls
- Do not select Exempt Log unless the driver qualifies for the 150 Air-Mile-Radius exemption—incorrect use can result in compliance violations.
- Do not expect the Driving Hours Available clock to function in exempt mode—it will display N/A.
- Do not forget that if an exempt log is converted to a standard log mid-day, trip information will be required at that point.
- The Exempt Log feature must be enabled by the administrator in the Encompass back office before it appears in the app.
Escalation Path
- Driver reviews this article for exempt log guidance on iOS.
- If the Exempt Log option does not appear, contact the Encompass Administrator to enable it in the back office.
